Got a copy of Quake II? Get ready to frag.

You remember Quake don’t you? The 1997 sequel to the spiritual successor of the DOOM series. User dghost on the Oculus developer forums released a Quake II mod that makes the classic game compatible with the Oculus Rift. The mod gives the game head tracking, positional tracking but most impressive, it breathes life into this old FPS game by introducing a VR element. Welcome to Quake VR.

The mod requires you to have a copy of Quake II (Which you can DOWNLOAD on Steam) and follow a few instructions. If you want to try before you buy, there is a short one level demo that you can download as well.

The game works great in VR and really adds new life to this classic PC shooter. Unlike current FPS games It’s not overly complex in terms of controls or graphics. With its low requirements any modern PC can run the game, the specs required to run Quake VR are laughable if you’re using a modern PC. Yet, even though the game looks like it was made over a decade ago, it doesn’t loose any of its fun factor or atmosphere. In VR, even with low graphics, the sense of presence and environment is strong. Quake VR had me genuinely scared at some points making me hesitate to enter a dark room or run from a suddenly appearing enemy. The Oculus Rift puts you right in the middle of all thee action, and with a smooth framerate and little to no juddering this is a great VR experience for gamers and VR enthusiasts.
