Gear VR | Samsung’s Oculus-powered headset coming 2014
They’re calling it the Samsung Gear VR Innovator Edition, or as the public will know it the Gear VR. Samsung’s VR device is powered by Oculus but seems to be primarily for mobile devices.
Using the 5.7 inch Quad HD Super AMOLED display of the Galaxy Note 4 it promises to provide great visuals with high resolutions. Features the Gear VR promises are virtual theaters, 360 degree videos, 3D videos and VR gaming.
Oculus has been working with Samsung for over a year developing the Gear VR. It is NOT a stand alone product like the Oculus Rift but instead an add-on peripheral to be used with the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, utilizing the device’s CPU and GPU. Gear VR uses a brand new Oculus Mobile SDK which will be available publicly on the Oculus Developer Center before the end of October.
